PoolStar is celebrating two decades of sparkling clean pools in Las Vegas, Henderson, Summerlin, Southwest, Southern Highlands, Seven Hills, Silverado Ranch, Green Valley, and more!
The holidays are here, and while Clark County might not look like a winter wonderland, the spirit is certainly sparkling! For many of us in the Las Vegas Valley, “winter” means cozy evenings by the fire pit often right next to a beautifully clean pool.
As we hang up the festive lights, we at PoolStar are celebrating a major milestone: 20 years of being your trusted, local, and family operated pool service right here in Southern Nevada.
From our family to yours, thank you for inviting us into your backyard oasis since January 2006! We’ve grown up in this community, and every crystal clear pool we service is a badge of honor.
Your Holiday Tip: Don’t Let Your Guard Down on Winter Pool Care
Just because the water temperature has dropped and the holiday cooking has ramped up, it doesn’t mean your pool can be forgotten! In the Las Vegas desert, consistent winter maintenance is the secret to a happy, healthy, pool and a smooth transition to diving in again.
Think of these as the Three Wise Tips for keeping your pool water balanced through the season:
1. Keep the Filter Pump Running (Yes, Even When It’s Cold!)
- The Problem: On the coldest nights (which can still dip near freezing in the Valley!), standing water is prone to damage.
- The PoolStar Tip: Adjust your pump schedule, but do not turn it off completely. Keep the pump running for at least 6–8 hours per day, especially during the coldest hours (typically late evening into early morning). This continuous circulation prevents water in your pipes and equipment from freezing and causing costly damage.
2. Monitor Water Levels (The Silent Evaporator)
- The Problem: Even without the summer heat, the dry Las Vegas air and wind can cause significant water loss through evaporation.
- The PoolStar Tip: Continue to check your water level weekly. If the level drops below the skimmer, the pump can start sucking air, which can quickly overheat and damage your equipment. Most pools now days have an autofill that tops off the water as it goes down. Ensure this is working correctly. If you do not have an autofill and have to fill manually a few minutes with the hose can save you hundreds in repairs!
3. Never Skip the Chemistry (Algae Doesn’t Hibernate!)
- The Problem: Cooler water means no need for chemical balancing. This is a myth! An unbalanced pool can still grow algae and develop scaling.
- The PoolStar Tip: Maintaining proper pH and alkalinity is crucial year-round to protect your pool’s plaster and equipment. If you use a salt system, remember that many saltwater chlorinators stop producing chlorine when the water temperature falls too low. You may need to manually supplement with chlorine to maintain your required level, keeping your water sanitized.
